Arteta Stands Firm: Clear Conscience Amid Man City Controversy
Mikel Arteta, who transitioned from Manchester City to Arsenal in 2019, has no doubts about his integrity concerning the recent findings of Premier League rule violations by his former club.
During his tenure as Pep Guardiola's assistant from 2016 to 2019, Arteta was part of the setup during the nine seasons where City allegedly masked over £830 million in secret funding. Following the club's appeal against the ruling, Arteta faced questions in his latest press conference, stressing the need to respect the ongoing legal process.
As reporters probed deeper into his time at City, one question stood out: "With your senior role there, is your conscience clear?" Arteta's response was straightforward: "Yes." This brief reply spoke volumes, showing he was ready to maintain his stance despite the barrage of inquiries.
He kept his composure throughout the session, repeatedly steering the conversation back to his commitment to refrain from commenting on the specifics until the case is fully resolved. When asked about conversations with Guardiola, he simply stated, "I prefer not to answer those questions."
Addressing the independent commission's findings, which accused City of orchestrating fake contracts to mask earnings, Arteta reiterated the importance of respecting the ongoing investigation. "It’s crucial that we adhere to the process and timelines, as it’s still unresolved due to the appeal," he explained.
Regarding whether the integrity of the Premier League hinges on resolving the appeal this season, Arteta expressed confidence in the governing bodies. "Those in charge will manage this process correctly, and I believe it will be resolved appropriately. We need to trust that," he affirmed.
Arteta also declared his unwavering belief that the Premier League remains the best in the world. As Arsenal prepares to take on fifth-placed Leeds at the Emirates Stadium, they stand just three points behind league leaders City, intensifying the stakes as the season progresses.
