Brighton Eye Premier League Glory with Key Wins Against Liverpool and Man City
According to Paul Merson, Brighton & Hove Albion could firmly place themselves in the Premier League title race if they manage to triumph in their next two fixtures. Currently perched at third in the table, behind only Manchester City and Arsenal, the Seagulls are on a four-game winning streak in the league.
Their upcoming challenge is a showdown with Liverpool, set to be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League this Sunday. Brighton has struggled at Anfield in recent years, failing to secure a win in their last six trips there across all competitions. However, they'll face a Liverpool side still searching for their first league victory at home this season.
Following the clash with the Reds, Brighton will take on Man City at the Etihad on October 31, just three days after they meet in the Carabao Cup fourth round. Merson emphasized the importance of these matches: "That is it in a nutshell: we'll see where they are after the next two games. If they go and win their next two games, I don't care how long has gone in the season, they are one million per cent title contenders."
For Brighton, expectations will shift dramatically; they'll be aiming to win rather than simply compete. Merson noted that while Liverpool isn't in top form, a loss to Brighton would be a headline-making upset. He assessed Brighton's current quality, saying, "Right now, you’d probably argue they’re a better team than Liverpool. But it's all about that big team mentality, and the pressure is different."
Should Brighton falter in either match, the narrative may differ. Merson suggested that a draw in both games would be impressive, but ultimately, teams need to secure wins to make a statement. He expressed confidence in Brighton's ability to compete at a high level, stating, "Looking at their form, they shouldn't be getting beaten in these matches."
Merson praised Brighton's approach, particularly in their recent performance against Arsenal, where their high-tempo play and pressing game were evident. "They suffocate you, and it doesn’t matter how skilled you are, if they get on top of you, you struggle to respond," he remarked.
Jamie Carragher also weighed in, lauding Brighton as one of the season's standout stories. He compared their style to that of a classic Jurgen Klopp Liverpool team, describing it as aggressive and fast-paced. Carragher noted, "If you ask most fans how they want their team to play, it’s that—quick, direct football with plenty of action."
While Carragher appreciates Brighton's impressive start, he hesitated to fully endorse Merson's title contender claim. He acknowledged their strong performance but suggested they should aim for a Champions League spot rather than the title just yet. "It’s early in the season, but if they keep this up, they should definitely be aiming for a top-five finish," he concluded, pointing out the inconsistency of traditional powerhouses like Liverpool and Manchester United this season.
Tune in to watch Liverpool take on Brighton this Sunday, live on Sky Sports Premier League, with the match kicking off at 2pm.
