Burnham's Connections with Manchester City Unveiled
Andy Burnham has been in the spotlight recently for his interactions with Manchester City’s chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak. The Greater Manchester mayor met with al-Mubarak during an investment summit and also had a casual chat during a testimonial match for one of City’s star players. Details of Burnham’s engagements with the club, which has faced serious allegations regarding financial misconduct, were disclosed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. The mayor assured MPs that all his dealings with the club’s Abu Dhabi owners would be made public. A spokesperson from the GMCA confirmed that Burnham's formal meeting with al-Mubarak took place in October 2021, organized by the UK government’s Department for International Trade. Additionally, Burnham attended several Manchester City home matches, including Vincent Kompany’s testimonial in September 2019, where he met the chairman informally. During his tenure, it was common for representatives from Greater Manchester’s sports teams to join business missions abroad. This included Manchester United’s representatives traveling to Austin and Dublin, Lancashire Cricket Club heading to India, and Manchester City staff supporting trips to China and Japan. Manchester City has been found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules from 2009 to 2018, though the club continues to assert its innocence and has appealed the decision. Burnham expressed his concerns last month about the potential sale of the club by its Abu Dhabi owners, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping modern Manchester. In response to Burnham’s comments, Downing Street clarified that the prime minister views the judgment as serious, insisting that those found guilty of wrongdoing should face consequences. Shadow sports minister Louie French criticized the transparency of Burnham’s disclosures, arguing that fans deserve more clarity about his meetings and discussions with the club. French stated, "Burnham cannot hide behind the GMCA – he must take responsibility for this himself." He further questioned why Burnham was not more forthcoming and suggested that his defense of City’s owners has raised alarms among supporters. The call for more transparency regarding Burnham’s relationship with the City Football Group continues to grow.
