Can Carrick Tune Out the Chaos at Manchester United?
18 October 2026
Manchester United is having a tough time, winning only two out of their ten matches across all competitions this season.
As fans grapple with dwindling hope, Bryan Mbeumo found the net again at Elland Road, marking his fourth goal in just seven Premier League appearances.
Outside of Bruno Fernandes, who netted a hat-trick against Ipswich in August, no other player in Michael Carrick's squad has managed more than one goal. The goal tally is concerning.
While the 1-1 draw with Leeds United might seem acceptable at first glance, the reality is that it extends United's winless streak to six games—their worst run since the 2018-19 season when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed full-time manager.
Carrick, however, is trying to focus on the positives. He mentioned on BBC Radio Five Live that he had his headphones on this week, tuning out the noise surrounding Lisandro Martinez's controversial comments.
Yet, he knows the pressure is mounting, and victories are essential. Despite the draw being seen as a decent result against Leeds, as noted by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, it highlights a worrying trend of lowered expectations for the club.
Last season, Ruben Amorim's fiery press conference led to his swift dismissal, but this time it was Martinez who sparked controversy with his criticisms of the club's recruitment strategies.
With Jason Wilcox, the sporting director, watching from the stands, Martinez still started after apologizing for his comments. The lack of competition for Luke Shaw at left-back is evident, as Diogo Dalot became the fifth player to fill that role this season.
Shaw's fitness for the upcoming Champions League clash against Como remains uncertain, and constant changes are not helping Carrick’s cause. Martinez's exit at halftime due to injury further complicates matters, forcing Carrick to opt for full-back Noussair Mazraoui instead of Matthijs de Ligt, who is still recovering from a long-term back issue.
Currently, United sits 13th in the Premier League, and there’s a risk they could drop lower as the matchweek progresses. Unlike Amorim, Carrick managed to find a silver lining in the situation, saying, "It felt like a bit of a fresh start today."
He acknowledged the difficult circumstances but emphasized the team's potential to turn things around. "There has been a cycle where it can go in different directions. We've got to be stable enough to keep doing the right things. We're capable of winning matches, and I believe we can go on a good run."
Bryan Mbeumo's recent performances have been crucial. While he missed an early header and couldn't stop Dominic Calvert-Lewin's equalizer, he's still a key player for United, especially with Benjamin Sesko sidelined by injury.
Mbeumo has been versatile, shifting positions as needed, moving from the right to the left wing and now playing as a central striker. Former United striker Dion Dublin remarked, "When you're in this Manchester United team, you just have to go where is best for the team."
Carrick praised Mbeumo's commitment, stating, "He gives so much to the team and is willing to do whatever it takes to help us succeed. He's getting into great positions and is a real threat for us."
As Manchester United continues to navigate this challenging season, all eyes will be on Carrick and his ability to lead the team back to form.
