Celtic's Statement Win: O'Neill Keeps Perspective After Thrashing Hearts
Celtic’s commanding 7-1 victory over Hearts has certainly turned heads, but manager Martin O'Neill isn’t getting carried away. After the match, he expressed feelings of elation and relief, while acknowledging the ongoing discontent among supporters. Despite the tension surrounding the club, Celtic now sits four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, bolstered by a goal difference that’s significantly better than their closest rivals, Rangers. This resounding win against last season's runners-up has raised questions about whether Celtic has returned to their dominant form. O'Neill, however, is cautious. He emphasized the long road ahead in the season, downplaying the notion that this was a definitive 'statement' win. "We’re only eight or nine games in, and while it was great to win like that, we have to keep perspective," he told BBC Scotland. The performance itself was certainly noteworthy. Kris Boyd, a former striker for Rangers, remarked that it reminded him of the high-octane style that defined Celtic under Ange Postecoglou. He noted, "That first half was devastating," highlighting the attacking prowess on display. Ryan McGowan, a former Hearts defender, concurred, stating that Celtic’s display was likely their best of the season. He acknowledged Hearts' struggles on the day but credited Celtic for their cohesive performance. Pat Bonner, a former Celtic goalkeeper, saw improvement in the team’s organization and spirit. He pointed out the contributions of young players like Callum Osmand and Colby Donovan, who he felt set a positive tone for the match. Scott Brown, a former Celtic captain, echoed this enthusiasm, describing the overall performance as "fantastic." He praised the pace of the forward line, singling out Camilo Duran for his excitement and noting Osmand's significant impact in just one half. The attacking quartet of Osmand, Benjamin Nygren, Haissem Hassan, and Duran caused havoc for Hearts, with each player making meaningful contributions. O'Neill, however, reminded everyone that this isn’t necessarily the template for future matches. "With our busy schedule, we’ll need to rotate the squad," he explained. "Every game is crucial, especially with Celta Vigo coming up in the Europa League. We need to win to build momentum after two losses." As O'Neill prepares for the upcoming fixtures, he remains wary of the unpredictability of the season. "Four points at this stage is nothing," he remarked, stress-testing the importance of maintaining focus. "We’ll enjoy tonight, but there’s much work ahead." Chris Sutton, a fan favorite during O'Neill's first tenure, summed it up well: "It's a strange season for Celtic." With challenges ahead, the manager knows that consistency will be key in the months to come.
