Chelsea's Clean Sheet Overshadowed by Martinez Injury
Emiliano Martinez's move to Chelsea from Aston Villa for £7.5 million was supposed to be a fresh start, but his recent outing took an unexpected turn. The goalkeeper was rushed to the hospital after suffering what manager Xabi Alonso described as a concussion during Chelsea's win against Everton on Saturday. Martinez had just helped Chelsea secure their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months, a streak that had spanned 23 games. However, his injury cast a shadow over what was otherwise a solid 2-0 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium, courtesy of two goals from Pedro Neto. The incident occurred in the 68th minute when Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to claim a free-kick from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. There was an extensive eight-minute stoppage before Martinez was substituted for Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut and held firm for the remainder of the match. After the game, Alonso shared his concerns: "It was a concussion, but beyond that I do not know. I have only seen one clip of the incident, so we need to wait. What we know is that he left the stadium conscious and is now in hospital undergoing precautionary tests. Hopefully, it will not be too serious, but we just have to wait." As the team gears up for a challenging schedule that includes Tottenham and Manchester United in the Premier League, as well as a Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool, doubts loom over Martinez's availability. Chelsea's clean sheet was a welcome relief, as they had previously conceded a league-high 13 goals before this match. Alonso, not overly fixated on clean sheets, was eager to improve on the team's defensive record after a commanding 5-1 win over Bournemouth last time out. In the past, Chelsea faced criticism for being a "soft" team, especially during away matches in the north of England, having lost 19 of their last 41 encounters in that region. In fact, they had managed just one win in their previous nine trips to Goodison Park. This time around, Everton was limited to a mere six shots, their lowest in a Premier League match since last December. Chelsea's defense allowed just one clear-cut chance, achieving their lowest expected goals against (xG) figure of the season at 0.45. The Blues utilized a back three featuring Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix, and Levi Colwill, while goalscorer Neto and Jorrel Hato operated effectively as wing-backs. The midfield duo of Moises Caicedo, back from international duty, and new signing Jordan Henderson provided the much-needed stability. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers, at £117 million, also made his mark, showing his physicality by confronting Everton defender James Tarkowski in a lively first half. Alonso emphasized the importance of this victory: "We needed to show that we can win in this way. We looked solid, we played solidly, we were strong and we stayed in control." With tough matches looming, the readiness of Penders, who at 21 became Chelsea's youngest goalkeeper in Premier League history, comes into question. If Martinez's concussion is confirmed, protocols typically require a minimum 14-day recovery period. Penders joined Chelsea from Genk for £17 million in 2024 and has impressed during his loan spells. Standing at 6ft 7in, he’s often compared to Thibaut Courtois and has trained with top goalkeeping coaches who have developed other elite talents. Roex, who has guided Penders since his academy days, believes he has the potential to reach Courtois' heights. "We have produced a lot of great goalkeepers, but Mike is the one with the potential to reach the same level as Thibaut. His sense of calm is gold in goalkeeping," he stated.
