Duncan Ferguson Takes the Helm at Glentoran: A New Era Begins
In a surprising move, Duncan Ferguson has been announced as the new manager of Glentoran, the Irish Premiership club. The former striker, who made his name at Everton and Rangers, is ready to take on the challenge in east Belfast on a multi-year deal.
At 54, Ferguson boasts a wealth of experience, having played for clubs like Dundee United and Newcastle United, as well as earning seven caps for Scotland. His coaching journey includes time as an assistant at Everton under high-profile managers like Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez, along with two stints as caretaker manager. Recently, he managed Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Ferguson's hiring comes on the heels of Declan Devine's departure from the club earlier this season. Joining him as assistant manager is Gary Bollan, a former team-mate from their days at Dundee United.
Despite significant investment from owner Ali Pour, Glentoran has not lifted a league title since 2009. Ferguson acknowledges the weight of responsibility that comes with the role, stating, "I am delighted to become manager of Glentoran. This is a big club with a tremendous history, and it is a great opportunity for me."
He went on to express his ambition, saying, "I want to win trophies here. Glentoran should be challenging for the title and every cup and shield we enter. I understand that success will be measured by what we achieve on the pitch."
Ferguson emphasized his commitment to the club, stating, "I have signed for the long term. I want to get to know the people at the Club and in the wider community and become part of life here. Their support has to be earned, and I am looking forward to getting started."
Owner Ali Pour expressed confidence in Ferguson's capabilities, highlighting the thorough recruitment process that led to his appointment. "We took the time this decision deserved," Pour noted. "Duncan impressed us with his football knowledge, experience, and determination to take on this opportunity."
Former Glentoran captain Paul Leeman is intrigued by Ferguson's arrival, saying, "It's a huge appointment, and I'm interested to see his plans for Glentoran. He has bags of experience in football, and while it's a risk, he can certainly add value to the team."
Ferguson's predecessor, Declan Devine, departed after guiding the team to a County Antrim Shield victory in the 2024-25 season, their first trophy since 2020. Now, Ferguson's mission is clear: to end the 17-year wait for a league title.
Currently sitting fourth in the Irish Premiership, Glentoran has secured five wins but suffered four losses in their first 11 games this season. Ferguson's first match in charge will be against Ballymena United on Saturday.
