EFL Showdown: Pressure Mounts for Struggling Managers at Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, and Bristol Rovers
As the days grow shorter, the pressure is mounting for several EFL managers. With the season still in its early stages, the harsh realities of football are starting to take their toll. In just the last couple of days, Crawley Town's Colin Kazim-Richards and Bromley’s Andy Woodman have found themselves out of a job, highlighting how quickly fortunes can change in this game. Yet, not every team is feeling the heat. With another round of fixtures approaching, some clubs are hoping for a turnaround to regain lost momentum. Norwich City, under the guidance of Philippe Clement, is currently struggling in the Championship. With only 24 goals conceded, they sit just above Preston in the defensive rankings, but that’s not the kind of statistic they want to be known for. This season was supposed to be different for Norwich. After Clement took the reins last November, the Canaries soared to ninth place with a strong finish, leaving fans excited for the new campaign. Instead, they find themselves in 21st place, having lost five consecutive league matches and accumulating just nine points from 11 games. The situation is eerily similar to last season, when they also languished near the bottom before sacking Liam Manning. Former Hull City striker Aaron McLean voiced his disbelief, admitting he had high hopes for Norwich’s promotion chances. "They’ve just been so disappointing and look void of any confidence at the moment," he remarked. Adding to Norwich’s woes is the injury to striker Mohamed Toure, who was in fine form with five goals in seven matches but will be sidelined for months. Clement remains hopeful, stating, "It's my task to stay calm in the frustration. There are still 35 games to play." Next up for the Canaries is a clash against Charlton Athletic, who are also struggling to find their feet after a promising start. The Addicks are winless in their last eight matches but have yet to lose at home this season, conceding just twice at The Valley. Meanwhile, Cardiff City finds a glimmer of hope after a 5-1 drubbing of Watford and a draw against promotion favorites Middlesbrough. With two wins from their last four games, they’ve climbed to 19th, three points clear of the relegation zone. Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy will be looking for another boost against a strong Birmingham City side, who have won three matches in a row and sit fourth in the table. The stakes are high, especially with Birmingham's coach Chris Davies having ties to Swansea City. In League One, Stockport County is enjoying a fantastic start to their season, currently leading the table after four consecutive wins. New manager Jimmy McNulty has sparked a revival, with striker Kyle Wootton scoring nine times in just 11 games. The Hatters hope this season marks a return to the second tier for the first time since 2002, following two near misses in the playoffs. They face 18th-placed Notts County next, who are looking to build off a recent victory. Over in Sheffield, Wednesday fans are growing restless as their team slips from first to seventh. After a promising start post-takeover, the Owls have managed just one win in five and frustrations are mounting. Rob Staton from BBC Radio Sheffield pointed out the disconnect between the table position and fan sentiment, stating, "You might look at the table and say this is harsh. No, this is reality for Wednesday." With pressure mounting on manager Henrik Pedersen, the coming matches will be crucial for all these clubs as they fight to turn their seasons around.
