Harry Kane's Stellar Showing Keeps Ballon d'Or Hopes Alive
Harry Kane's brilliance on the pitch never ceases to amaze, and his latest display against Arsenal was no exception.
In a thrilling 2-2 Champions League encounter, the Bayern Munich forward showcased his extraordinary talent before the first half was even half over. With just 25 minutes gone, Kane decided to take charge, launching an 80-yard pass from a Bayern goal-kick that sent shockwaves through the Arsenal defense.
"Under Vincent Kompany, he has been given a level of trust that he has probably never had before under any other manager," remarked former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha to BBC Sport.
Kane’s decision to take a goal-kick is something rarely seen, yet even seasoned goalkeeper Manuel Neuer trusted Kane's instincts enough to let him execute the play. "For him to be taking a goal-kick is not something you may want to see very often. You don't necessarily want your number nine to be THAT deep," Onuoha added, highlighting Kane's unique role in the team.
Despite missing out on an assist, Kane quickly made his mark. After Arsenal's Eberechi Eze opened the scoring, Kane responded with a beautifully curved pass that set up Alphonso Davies for the equalizer. Shortly after, he converted a penalty, marking his 16th goal against Arsenal in his career.
Although Declan Rice salvaged a point for Arsenal late in the match, Kane's performance only further cemented his status as a leading candidate for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. At 33, the former Tottenham captain is on the brink of becoming the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane's name was included in the 30-man shortlist announced in September, with the winner to be revealed soon by a panel of 100 international journalists. Declan Rice, who plays alongside Kane for England, declared, "He is the clear winner. His numbers speak for themselves. The year he has had has been remarkable."
Kane’s tally against Arsenal made him the second player in Champions League history to score in ten consecutive matches, joining the ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo, who achieved 11 in a row during his time at Real Madrid.
Onuoha praised Kane’s fit at Bayern, saying, "Kane certainly looks at home at Bayern. He understands the team and its system, and they all understand him." With the freedom to roam and create, Kane is thriving in the Bundesliga.
Since his move to Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, Kane has netted 156 goals in 158 appearances. As the Ballon d'Or ceremony approaches, he expressed his hopes, stating, "It would be amazing to win. The voting closed a long time ago so there's nothing I can do, just wait and see what happens."
