Kompany's Health Crisis: Bayern Munich Faces Extended Absence
Bayern Munich is bracing for a challenging period as head coach Vincent Kompany remains hospitalized due to a virus that caused him to collapse during training on Friday. Max Eberl, the club's sporting director, provided an update at a press conference on Saturday, assuring fans that Kompany is in stable condition but will be sidelined for weeks rather than days as he undergoes further examinations. In Kompany's absence, assistant coach Aaron Danks will take the reins for the Bundesliga clash against Freiburg on Sunday. Eberl stressed the importance of understanding the full scope of Kompany's condition before determining a recovery timeline. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs," he said. "We need to figure out what it is first, and then we can discuss recovery time calmly." Danks, who briefly spoke to Kompany on Friday to check on his health, emphasized that their focus is purely on well-being, saying, "I explained to him that we wouldn’t be having any football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK." Despite the situation, the club opted not to postpone Sunday’s match, with Eberl stating that playing well would likely be a source of encouragement for Kompany. "The greatest joy for Vinnie would be for us to play well tomorrow, ideally securing a positive result," he added. In addition to Kompany's absence, Bayern will also miss Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, who is currently on bereavement leave. Kompany had only recently returned to the sidelines for a Champions League match against Arsenal, where he revealed he had been battling a nasty virus. "I didn’t listen to my body, and at some point, it just said: ‘Enough is enough!’" he admitted. As it stands, Bayern Munich leads the Bundesliga table with 14 points, tied with Borussia Dortmund and just ahead of Freiburg and Leverkusen. Their next Champions League fixture is scheduled for November 3 against Atlético Madrid in Spain.
