Martinez Opens Up on Frustration with United's Board
Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine defender, joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022, but recently he’s been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
After Manchester United's disheartening 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stage, Martinez didn’t hold back. He voiced his anger and frustration regarding the club's lack of summer signings, especially after they secured a spot in the prestigious Champions League.
Martinez expressed his expectation for greater investment in the squad and mentioned a desire for more from the technical director, Jason Wilcox. While he didn’t outright apologize for his comments, he made it clear that he still has faith in his teammates, manager Michael Carrick, and the club's future.
"After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted," he shared on social media.
He continued, "Those who know me understand that I approach football with immense passion and dedication. Losing hurts, especially while representing a club with such a rich history as Manchester United."
Martinez’s words reveal his deep commitment to the club and his desire to see them competing for top honors. He emphasized the high standards he believes are essential for the team.
"When I talk about wanting more, it’s about the ambition we need to embody as a club. We must grow stronger and ensure we have everything required to compete at the highest level. This is a standard we should all uphold, starting with me," he stated.
Since their last victory against Sabah on September 10, United has struggled, failing to win in five matches, and currently sits 13th in the Premier League with only six points from their first six games.
Martinez's contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but United has the option to extend it for another year. He acknowledged the players' responsibility to deliver results, placing himself at the forefront of that accountability.
"We need to push ourselves harder and unite to bring Manchester United back to the top. I believe in my teammates and our manager, and I’m convinced that collaboration, ambition, and commitment are key to moving forward," he added.
Martinez's singular goal remains clear: to win, compete at the highest level, and give everything for the Manchester United badge. The next challenge awaits as they face Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday, October 18.
