Palace Stands by Sage Amid Pressure Following Brighton Blowout
Pierre Sage has been given a bit more time to address Crystal Palace's defensive woes, but the pressure is mounting after a staggering 5-0 loss to Brighton on Sunday. The 47-year-old Frenchman's future was thrown into question after his squad conceded three goals in the first ten minutes, matching the club's 70-year-old record for the heaviest defeat against their bitter rivals. With 17 goals conceded in just seven Premier League matches, Palace now holds the unwanted title of the league's leakiest defense. Chairman Steve Parish has been skeptical of Sage's capabilities since he took over from Oliver Glasner during the summer transfer window. Rumors suggest that Parish contemplated dismissing Sage following the Brighton debacle, but ultimately decided to hold off on any drastic changes as the team sits at 14th in the table—far from the relegation zone. Sage is expected to lead the team into Thursday's Europa League clash against Besiktas, as well as Sunday's Premier League encounter with Newcastle. However, it has been made clear that his job security is anything but stable. Should a change occur, Kieran McKenna and Thomas Frank are reportedly among the candidates to take over. Tensions between Sage and Parish have been simmering since the summer transfer window, particularly after the club failed to secure Sage's preferred defensive targets to replace Maxence Lacroix. Instead of landing key players, Palace opted for two loanees, Axel Disasi and young prospect Honest Ahanor, while missing out on Belgium forward Malick Fofana on deadline day, despite Sage's interest. Adding to the discord, Parish was displeased with Sage's handling of Jaydee Canvot, who was dropped for the home defeat to Ipswich last month. There were also frustrations regarding Adam Wharton's substitution after Disasi received a first-half red card in that same match. While some within the club have advocated for Sage's dismissal, Parish appears to be weighing the challenges posed by Disasi's suspension and injuries to key players like Chadi Riad and Takehiro Tomiyasu. He seems inclined to give Sage a chance to rectify the situation. On a more personal note, defender Chris Richards reached out to Palace fans on Instagram, expressing regret for not acknowledging them after the disheartening defeat. "I want to apologize for walking off after the game," he wrote. "I was emotional and embarrassed with the result – I know how much this club means to all of you. We have to take responsibility, do better and show that on the pitch."
