Peterborough Chairman Defends Savage Appointment Amid Controversy
Robbie Savage kicked off his managerial career at Peterborough United with a bang, securing his first league victory against his former club, Leicester City, on Saturday. However, the appointment has sparked a dispute with Forest Green Rovers' owner, Dale Vince, who claims that Peterborough made an illegal move to bring Savage on board. Vince spoke to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, revealing that he initially denied Peterborough permission to discuss the managerial vacancy with Savage. Vince recounted the situation, stating, "It was tough to say no to a friend, so I eventually said, 'fine, go and talk to them.'" He accused Peterborough of mishandling the approach, saying, "They came to us and expressed interest in our manager. We said no, but they spoke to him anyway. That’s an illegal approach." In response, MacAnthony took to X to clarify that the process of hiring Savage was entirely above board. He asserted that the club followed all necessary protocols in the managerial appointment. The saga began when Forest Green announced late last month that Savage, 51, had been cleared to speak with other clubs, eventually leading to Peterborough extending an offer following the departure of Luke Williams. Vince expressed frustration, stating, "Peterborough showed no respect for Robbie's position during the negotiations. He was caught in a difficult situation, with verbal offers that were later denied. We ultimately felt it was best for him to move on." He added, "Robbie is a friend, and he had a pressing need to leave. It made proper negotiations impossible. In the end, we prioritized Robbie’s well-being over everything else." MacAnthony, a seasoned owner in the EFL, responded by saying, "I have a deep respect for the process after 20 years in this business. I wish Forest Green luck in finding a new manager." As for Forest Green, they haven’t yet confirmed whether they plan to reach out to the Football Association regarding this situation. Peterborough fans are eager to see what Savage will bring to the table, especially as he prepares for his first home league match against Burton Albion this weekend after the successful outing at Leicester.
