Real Madrid Calls for Tebas to Step Down Over Controversial Remarks
Real Madrid is once again pushing for the resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas following his incendiary comparison of the club's actions towards referees to the propaganda tactics used by Nazi Germany. In a lengthy social media post on Friday, Tebas took aim at Madrid, criticizing their club television channel for alleging that referees have negatively impacted their match outcomes. This channel frequently showcases what it deems to be blatant officiating errors involving referees assigned to upcoming matches for the illustrious 15-time European champions. Tebas did not hold back, stating, "Real Madrid has an orchestra of mouthpieces, and it leads the charge. The script remains constant: highlight plays that benefit them, repeat the supposed grievances, stoke suspicion, and pinpoint adversaries. It mirrors the propaganda techniques of Goebbels." He clarified, however, that his comparison was focused on the methods employed, not the ideology or the fans of Madrid. In response, Real Madrid released a statement asserting that Tebas, who has had several confrontations with club president Florentino Pérez over the years, is unfit for his role representing Spain's top clubs. They demanded his "immediate resignation." The statement highlighted, "Tebas’s ongoing behavior reflects a lack of neutrality, respect, and fairness that is incompatible with his institutional duties. His persistent assaults on Real Madrid and those advocating for transparency represent a genuine blight on Spanish football." Even head coach José Mourinho has echoed concerns about Madrid being undermined by refereeing decisions. Just last month, the club called for Tebas's resignation after he criticized them for their attack on the referee's performance during their 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid. In that same statement, Madrid reiterated its dissatisfaction with Tebas's response to the ongoing investigation into Barcelona's alleged payments to a referee committee official. Shifting focus, Spain’s football federation is set to escalate its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA rejected its appeal against sanctions for Islamophobic chants by supporters during a match against Egypt in March. FIFA has imposed a fine of $20,000 and mandated a closure of at least 15% of available seats for Spain's next home friendly. This stems from incidents at the RCDE Stadium, home of La Liga's Espanyol, where some fans chanted, "If you don’t jump, you’re a Muslim" during a World Cup warm-up match that ended in a goalless draw. The RFEF contended that the term "Muslim" was not inherently offensive and suggested that the fans' behavior should be evaluated under different FIFA regulations. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee dismissed this argument, stating that discriminatory language can be contextually evident even without explicit slurs.
