Tactical Blunders and Player Motivation: Manchester United's Nightmarish Loss to Como
Manchester United faced a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Como in the Champions League, prompting sharp criticisms from captain Bruno Fernandes and manager Michael Carrick. The loss marks yet another setback for a team that is now on a troubling seven-game winless streak. After the match, Fernandes didn't hold back in addressing the tactical decisions made by the coaching staff. He pointed out the lack of a coherent pressing strategy, stating that it was a decision from the coaches to avoid a man-to-man press, which left gaps for the opposition to exploit. In an interview with TNT Sports, Fernandes defended his teammates but was clear in his critique of the coaching staff. "It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little space behind," he explained. "When you give too much possession to teams like Como, they gain confidence, and that can lead to frustration for us." Como's impressive passing game saw them complete 594 passes, the highest tally against United in a Champions League match since Barcelona's 725 in April 2019. Fernandes argued that the tactical approach hindered United's ability to recover and capitalize on their chances. When asked if the tactics were to blame for the defeat, Fernandes redirected the responsibility, saying, "That's on the manager and the staff to see it, it's not on me." He called for a more aggressive approach to pressing, emphasizing the need to make the opposition uncomfortable, just as Como did to them. Meanwhile, Carrick, who had previously mended relations with Lisandro Martinez after the defender's criticism of the club's hierarchy, expressed his frustration in the aftermath of the loss. He dismissed Fernandes' tactical concerns, insisting, "We half pressed man-to-man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that. Whatever tactics you play, if you don't run back, you aren’t going to win." Typically composed in front of the media, Carrick was visibly upset as he addressed the media post-match. "I'm really angry," he admitted, emphasizing that the team's performance was far from acceptable. Interestingly, Manchester United has made unwanted history as the first English team to concede within the first two minutes in consecutive major European matches, with goals conceded at 47 seconds and 118 seconds against Atletico Madrid and Como, respectively. Carrick's assessment of the situation highlighted the players' lack of intensity. "It’s not just about the goals; it was the manner in which we played that was difficult to watch," he noted. He acknowledged that motivation and purpose were sorely lacking, stating, "You can't turn it on and off. You have to give everything every time." United now faces a crucial match against Bournemouth at home on Sunday, where they’ll need to find solutions to their current woes if they hope to end this winless streak in the Premier League.
