Villa's Winning Streak Continues with Dominant Display Against Viking
The Holte End proudly displayed a banner that read, “We’ve conquered before, we’re prepared for more.” While no one expected Aston Villa to replicate their 1982 European glory, the current squad is certainly looking like serious contenders for the Champions League. A late acrobatic volley from Peter Christiansen offered Viking a consolation goal, but it wasn’t enough to overshadow Villa’s dominant performance. Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendía made their mark early on, effectively sealing the win for Villa in a first half that highlighted their superiority. An own goal from Henrik Heggheim briefly had Villa fans dreaming of a continental triumph. For Viking, this match marked a significant moment as it was their first encounter with Premier League opposition since 2002, when they faced Chelsea. Although they lost that match, they went on to create history by progressing in the UEFA Cup, a feat now long behind them. The Norwegian champions are still riding high after ending a 34-year title drought, and last week’s hard-fought 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich showcased their resilience. However, this match was expected to be a straightforward task for Villa, who had just triumphed over Fenerbahce and Newcastle. Manager Unai Emery gave 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye a chance to shine on the left side, while Pau Torres, Barkley, and John McGinn rotated into the lineup. McGinn almost set up a goal within the first four minutes, but Nicolas Jackson’s unmarked header went straight to Viking’s keeper, Arild Østbø. Just minutes later, another chance presented itself, this time from Buendía’s assist, but Jackson again failed to find the back of the net. Despite being backed by a lively traveling support, it seemed like Viking had caught Jackson on an off day. He did manage to assist McGinn with a blocked shot in the 15th minute, but Villa’s pressure was mounting. They were close to scoring when a cross from João Gomes hit the crossbar, but the opening goal came shortly after. From a corner, Mbaye delivered a perfect inswinger that Barkley met with a powerful header, putting Villa ahead. With the lead secured, it was hard to see how Viking would respond. They nearly fell further behind when Østbø saved a shot from Alysson, but Buendía couldn’t capitalize on the rebound, sending a header wide of an empty net. Just past the half-hour mark, Buendía found himself unmarked after a clever corner from McGinn but failed to convert. However, Villa’s second goal came soon after when VAR intervened to award a penalty for a foul on Alysson, which Buendía confidently converted. At this point, Viking was struggling to create any real attacking threat. As the second half began, Villa had a couple of corners to defend. Viking’s Tobias Moi tried to spark a comeback with a shot saved by Zion Suzuki, and his subsequent effort was blocked. The Norwegian side appeared more assertive, but Villa was ready to exploit any gaps. Alysson took advantage of the space and came close with a drive that just missed. Suzuki was forced to make another save as he dealt with a powerful shot from Tripic. However, any hopes Viking had of a comeback were dashed when Alysson, outpacing Jesper Daland, sent a cross that deflected off Heggheim into the net, giving Villa a commanding 3-0 lead. Jackson, eager to find his scoring touch, missed another chance before Emery began to shuffle his squad. Alejandro Garnacho, one of the substitutes, had an effort saved, but it was Christiansen’s late strike that provided Viking with a memorable moment, even if it was too little, too late.
