Carrick Faces Uncertain Future After Humbling Loss
Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager hangs by a thread after a crushing 4-1 loss against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. With Bournemouth set to visit Old Trafford this Sunday, discussions regarding Carrick’s future are likely to take place among key figures like director of football Jason Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada, and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who oversees sporting decisions. Following the defeat, an “angry” Carrick maintained that he hadn’t contemplated his own situation but found himself defending his approach against criticism from his captain, Bruno Fernandes. The captain took issue with the decision to avoid pressing against a team led by Cesc Fàbregas, while Carrick pointed fingers at his players for their lack of effort. United’s dismal record now stands at just two victories from 11 matches, leaving them languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, while they were also ousted from the Carabao Cup last month. When asked if he was worried about losing his job, Carrick replied, “I’ve not given my own position any thought. My focus is on the supporters—I was one of them watching that and I wasn’t happy at all.” He rejected the notion of stepping away after such a setback, emphasizing, “It’s not about me right now. It’s about the team and what we want to represent. Results can fluctuate, but we need to perform in a certain way. That wasn’t it.” Despite 700 United fans making the trip, only around 200 remained by the end. Carrick made a point to apologize to them, notably avoiding eye contact with his players. The night turned sour almost instantly when Nico Paz scored in the second minute, and by the 57th minute, Como was leading 3-0 courtesy of goals from Tasos Douvikas and Paz again, with Jacobo Ramón sealing the deal in the 76th minute. Joshua Zirkzee managed a consolation goal for United in stoppage time. Fernandes did not hold back in critiquing Carrick’s game plan. “It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind,” he noted. “When you give space to these teams, they gain confidence.” When pushed on whether Carrick’s tactics were flawed, Fernandes deflected, saying, “That’s for the manager and staff to evaluate. Under pressure, we need to be braver and take risks to press high.” After the match, Carrick responded to Fernandes’s comments, stating, “We actually half-pressed man-to-man in the second half and then conceded a goal from that. Regardless of the system, if you don’t run, you won’t win.” Looking ahead to Bournemouth, Carrick expressed his feelings candidly. “I’m bitterly disappointed, frustrated—really angry. But we must move on,” he said. “There’s much to do to prepare the team for the next game; that was a tough night for everyone, and I owe an apology to the supporters.”
