SPFL Opens Bidding for Future TV Rights from 2029-30 Season
The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) is looking ahead, inviting broadcasters to submit bids for the UK television rights to show Scottish Premiership matches starting from the 2029-30 season. This comes as the current five-year agreement with Sky Sports, worth £150 million, is set to run until the end of the 2028-29 season. Sky Sports currently airs up to 60 matches each season, while Premier Sports also has the rights to broadcast 22 Scottish top-flight games. The SPFL has hinted at a willingness to be flexible regarding the number of games that will be available for live broadcast in the future. SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster emphasized the importance of strong broadcast partnerships for the financial health of the league and its clubs. "Securing strong broadcast partnerships is an essential element in maintaining a balanced and sustainable income mix for the SPFL and its clubs," he stated. Doncaster also expressed optimism about the bidding process, noting that the league is known as one of Europe’s most thrilling national competitions, which should attract significant interest from broadcasters. Additionally, the SPFL clarified that a separate deal with Premier Sports for the Scottish League Cup, covering both broadcast and sponsorship rights, is solidified until at least the end of the 2030-31 season and will remain unaffected by this new bidding process.
