Maddison Shines Bright in First Start for Spurs with Stunning Goal
James Maddison made a triumphant return to the Tottenham starting lineup, scoring a spectacular goal to help Spurs secure a 3-1 victory over Coventry. This marked his first start in nearly 18 months, following a long recovery from an ACL injury, and it was just the boost Tottenham needed to climb off the bottom of the Premier League table.
The 29-year-old playmaker opened the scoring with a beautiful curling shot from distance, setting the tone for a much-needed win. After enduring a frustrating spell on the sidelines, Maddison expressed his excitement about finally being back in action, stating, "I have so much more to give for this club. I'm 29 and I still have plenty of years left."
Spurs had invested heavily in new signings over the summer, shelling out £334 million to bolster their squad after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Maddison wanted to demonstrate that he could be the key player to help turn their fortunes around.
Reflecting on his impactful return, he said, "I hoped [to make an impact]. I spoke to the gaffer about this week and felt it was the right moment for me to go back into the starting XI. I just wanted to play well and show what the team has missed in the last 18 months."
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Maddison could be the linchpin for Spurs this season. "I think he is seen as that type of player. He's naturally someone who lifts the mood and can really influence the team dynamics," Carragher noted.
Maddison’s goal came just 14 minutes into the match, courtesy of an assist from Mohammed Kudus. It was a much-needed spark for Spurs after a disappointing start to their campaign.
"It was a joy to see his goal," Carragher added. "You want players like him around in the Premier League. Coming back from an injury like that, there's always a fear—will you return to your best? But he’s still got that magic in his boots!"
Before this match, Maddison’s last competitive start was in May 2025, when Ange Postecoglou was still at the helm. Spurs had sorely missed him, enduring a tough previous season that nearly saw them relegated.
Maddison reflected on the significance of his goal, saying, "Those are the ones you dream of. After those dark days recovering from the ACL, moments like this are the light at the end of the tunnel."
Alongside Maddison's inspiring return, Dejan Kulusevski also made headlines by coming off the bench for his first competitive appearance in 526 days. "I felt really emotional and proud of Dejan today because I knew exactly what he was feeling stepping back onto the pitch after that long," Maddison shared.
Patrick Rowe from Sky Sports praised Maddison’s overall performance, highlighting his ability to drop deep, find space, and create chances for his teammates. "He looks like the piece that could link the £300m pieces of this Spurs puzzle together," Rowe remarked, emphasizing the importance of keeping Maddison fit and firing for the club's future success.
